Subject: Radial Ranking to be used for Worlds

The realities with the current Radial Ranked sailors are that - some have moved to full rig. - some won't be sailing seriously again until after various exams. - some won't be available to go to the worlds. - some of the current ISA academy high performance trainees do not have a / or full Radial Ranking. Taking the above fallout into account and excluding the new surge ex 4.7s you are looking at allocating the 10 nominations to sailors listed down the ranking or current performance scale - the Munster results will evidence this. Given the standard of competition to be faced at the Worlds we need to urgently revise this approach and put the current best active sailors forward.

The ranking system is there for a reason and has been a successful way to select the top Irish sailors for a long time. Just because it doesn't suit a few of you doesn't mean the system is wrong. The system can't be changed every time one of you doesn't like it. And surely the class can decide itself who is going. Why do we need the ISA getting involved.

This is the first year that nominations came into play. Look at the Radial Rankings for both 2005 and 2006 ( see Ranking Section on this site) - they show an entirely different picture for sailors who remained in the class - some improved significantly and vice versa. Given this the rankings do not reflect who are the current best active sailors. I believe that every sailor in the class (including those who are new to Radials)should have an oportunity to compete for a nomination. This is fair to all. Surely a Radial sailor with a ranking would welcome fresh competition. If that person cannot hold their own against newcomers to the class how can they expect to compete in the Worlds against much stiffer competition. The support of the ISA is fundamental for the success of any Irish Team competing at an International Event.
